Danish Dairy Industry Exports of dairy products account for more than 20 percent of all Danish agricultural exports. The Danish dairy industry consists of the international dairy group Arla Foods and 30 smaller dairy companies, together processing 4.7 billion kg milk from a total of 61 production plants in Denmark. The value of all Danish dairy exports totals EUR 1.8 billion annually. The domestic market is, to a large extent, a market for domestic dairy production, although imported cheese and yoghurt now account for approx. 25 percent and 20 percent, respectively, of total domestic consumption. The market share of foreign milk remains moderate. Like the processing sector, the Danish milk producers have seen tremendous structural change, with production now taking place on a small number of large farms. In 2010, approx. 4,100 dairy farmers each had an average of 127 cows and a milk quota of 1,142 tonnes. This places the Danish dairy farmers among the largest and most modern in Europe. More than half the cows live in new loose-housing systems. Exports of dairy products, in particular cheese, preserved milk products and butter, account for more than 20 percent of all Danish agricultural exports. The largest market for Danish dairy products is the other EU countries. Maintaining milk yield during a cow’s lactation period typically requires a cow to be milked twice a day – with maximum time spacing between milking. This means that all of a farmer’s activities must be scheduled around the milking process on the farm. These milking routines put restrictions on time management and also the personal life of the individual farmer, as he is committed to milking in the early morning and in the evening seven days a week - regardless of personal health, family responsibilities or social schedule. By choosing automated processes, including robotic milking arms and voluntary milking, the farmer frees up time from the tedious and tightly scheduled task of milking and is able to concentrate on other areas of his business, like field work, taking care of equipment, reproduction, calving, handling sick cows or simply spending more time with family. On larger dairy farms, the quantity of hired labour and their management is reduced and on the family farms, robotic milking brings flexibility and increased quality of life. In addition, farmers state that milking high yield cows more often (in a voluntary milking system) and on a regular basis improves udder health and lifetime production and thereby impacts farm profitability. There are various studies that support a 20-30% reduction in labour for milking-related activities when switching to robotic miking. A milking robot will do the same job, day in and day out, and will always be on time. Irrespective of size, it comes down to being more efficient and getting more done in less time. Learn the secrets of Australia's Top Organic Farmers. Organic farming is currently receiving a lot of attention. Many farmers are keen to give organics a go but are unsure about the process involved and it's viability. Our one hour video hopes to demystify organic farming by bringing together some of Australia's top commercial organic and non-toxic farmers, and ask them how they manage their enterprises without the use of synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. Mark joined a tour led by Nuffield Farming Scholar Don MacFarlane which took in ten different properties including the Victorian Agricultural Research Centre. The great thing about the one hour video is that it allows the farmers involved to tell their own story on why they went organic, how they went about it and whether it has been a viable move. The video covers such diverse farming enterprises as organic cattle, sheep, poultry, pigs, grain, wine, fruit and vegetables. Some of the farms included in the video are: The Druce family farm "Green Grove" which produces it's own flour and confectionary at their Junee flourmill. Alan Druce has been organic since 1962 and the success they are having with their Green Grove Organics operation in Junee is a fine example to country towns everywhere of what can be done to bring life back into the country. The Statham Family property "Rosnay" near Canowindra which is setting up a grower-marketing group for organic wine, olives, potatoes and pastured poultry. The Statham's wish to form an organic farming community at Rosnay, with 20 acre blocks available for purchase. Nick and Fiona Chambers of 'Fernleigh Farms' near Daylesford, who farm organic vegetables, beef and grazing pigs. They have developed an export market to Japan. Fiona is a senior consultant with Rendell McGuckian Agricultural and Management Consultants and is involved in developing the organic dairy industry. Are organic foods really healthier than non-organic foods? Are they better for animals? Are they better for the environment? Bjorn Lomborg, president of the Copenhagen Consensus Center, explains. And everywhere we are urged to eat organic: it's more nutritious, pesticide-free, and protects animals and the environment. At least, that's what we are being told – or rather, sold. And thanks to a lot of very effective marketing, many people believe it. That's why, when researchers at Cornell University gave study participants a choice between two identical items, one labeled "organic" and one "regular," the participants confidently declared the "organic" choice to be lower in calories and more nutritious. They also said they'd pay 16 to 23 percent more for the organic choice. But these beliefs about organic food have nothing to do with reality. In 2012, Stanford University's Center for Health Policy did the most comprehensive comparison and found organic foods are not nutritionally superior to conventional alternatives. And a more recent review of 20 years of research into animal products by Italian researchers confirmed these findings. The authors concluded: "Scientific studies do not show that organic products are more nutritious and safer than conventional foods." That's fine, you might say. You don't eat organic foods just because of the health benefits, but because you care about the treatment of farm animals and of the environment. Unfortunately, the facts don't support these beliefs either. Animals on organic farms are not generally healthier than regular farms. A five-year US study of dairy farms showed that "health outcomes [for animals on organic farms] are similar to conventional dairies." And the Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food Safety reached a similar conclusion. It found "no difference in objective disease occurrence" on organic dairy farms as compared to conventional dairies. And while pigs and poultry on organic farms may enjoy better access to open areas, this freedom, studies show, also increases their exposure to parasites, pathogens and predators. As for the environment, yes, organic farming will mean that in any one field, a farmer will use less energy and create fewer greenhouse gases. But there's a problem here. By forgoing fertilizers and pesticides, organic farming is much, much less efficient than standard farming, which means that organic farmers need much more land to grow the same amount of food. A major study in Europe found that to produce the same gallon of milk organically, you need 59% more land. To produce meat, you need 82% more land. And for crops, it’s more than 200%. And more land for agriculture means less land for nature. If U.S. agricultural production was entirely organic, it would mean we would need to convert an area bigger than the size of California entirely to farmland. Economically, the lower productivity of organics means we have to commit more resources - land, labor and capital. The total cost to the US economy of going organic would run to about $200 billion annually.
